In 1706, Twinings was one of the first companies to introduce tea drinking to the British when Thomas Twining began selling tea from his first premises on the Strand in London.
300 years later, Twinings is a purveyor of teas worldwide. A lot has happened since the early days on the Strand, and we invite you to travel back in time and explore Twinings' history.
Founded by Thomas Twining in 1706, the house of Twinings has been steeped in the tradition of tea for ten generations. Thomas Twining, a weaver by trade, was born in the English West Country in 1675. As a young boy, he moved with his family up to London. In 1706, he entered the competitive world of popular coffee shops and opened Tom's Coffee House in Devereaux Court, just off the fashionable Strand. As a novelty and a means of attracting the more discerning clientele, he decided to serve tea, a luxury that was not readily available to any but the very wealthy.
From that day, Twinings reputation as a teaman to connoisseurs spread throughout the world.
Today, Stephen Twining, tenth generation of the original family, carries on the tradition that placed Twinings in the forefront as blenders of the world's finest teas.
